I don’t think it’s acknowledged nearly enough how good the art has gotten. The angle and framing of the bottom left panel is really well done, everything looks just a little exaggerated, like we’re viewing it though a different lens to fit everything in frame. It’s subtle but really well executed.
On the other hand, in German folklore before Faust, the Devil is a great big loser who never gets a single soul in a deal – mortals always weasel their way out. He only wins when people break taboos they didn’t even know about and he just carries them right off to Hell without warning.
