In another world, a living corpse mourns the deaths of those he scorned as he drifts in bloody water, surrounded by broken memories and his better nature howling truths he hadn’t grasped before into ears that hear nothing but his own thoughts. “God is unattainable by transaction. Good men keep no accounts and are richer for it. But if the ledgers of this world are your meaning, then rot in this world until better men reshape it.”
In this world right here, a clown learns that exact same lesson in a bowling alley. Later, he gets some coffee. The meaning and the impact of the lesson are not diminished by these circumstances.

There’s still too much that we don’t know about McBell and why the Shadow Circus was so interested in her… and also about why she was so heavily coded as Echo’s equal and opposite number if they really don’t have any link. Maybe she’s a clone of Maggie, or something like that? It would explain her near-total lack of a past, and why they were so preoccupied with getting her in the right place. Gah. This is frustrating. Anyway, skipped ahead. Need to go back and read through all those properly instead of blazing through.

that’s just something you always have to do if you share one with other people and you don’t want them stealing your food. but every time we go somewhere new we don’t carry that lesson with us. good to see him reminding her
