    The smoke is nonessential, they just include it in the door opening sequence to disorient prisoners when the guards dramatically enter. Nobody realized it would work equally well for prisoners dramatically exiting. (No, I lie, it came up in the brainstorming session when they were building the place, but they all agreed it would look badass and left it in.)

    They let Strongman hotbox his cell, thinking it may calm him down. It didn’t but at least now he has a cool entrance.

    I’d assume that the reason is pressurized steam for super strong technology.
