In panel 2, that’s not the face of a little girl upset she dropped her bunny over the railing, that’s the face of a girl who wanted to see what would happen when she dropped her bunny and didn’t realize until it hit the bottom that there was a clown there lmao
Clown makeup makes clowns look inhuman enough to tip them into the uncanny valley for some viewers. Also, many clowns are loud and many children react poorly to loud noises they didn’t make.
What GreatWyrmGold said. My aunt used to say a well-trained clown will let kids come to them on their own terms. But there will always be someone who gets too close before a kid is ready, or a parent who doesn’t let their kid acclimatize to the clown because ‘I like clowns so of course my kid will too’.
another really excellent piece of narrative work ngl. this comic is so impressive in how it makes such strong and unflinching points using clowns. i like how mcbell is upset that a child is afraid of her which is so much more powerful when she is part of an organisation that originated to protect children
wouldn’t be a clown story without addressing this eventually
Clowns, outside of this story, are terrifying.
That head angle in panel 2 makes Mcbell look like an owl. A… clowny owl. A liminal being that cannot decide whether to go ‘honk honk’ or ‘hoot hoot’.
A… clowl?
Nah homie…
a COWL!
considering what some of the ones in the corps are capable of? I would be too imh
Shit that really takes on a whole different meaning here huh
SEE!? Clown firefighters are still scary.

Mcbell: “I don’t blame her. I don’t like clowns much either.”
I think clowns only scare people because we associate them with children’s entertainment, when that’s not what they’re historically intended to be.
They’re general entertainers.
People are afraid of clowns because the dichotomy of “Funny entertainer” and “scary monster” makes them an easy target for hack horror writers.

Do you want your rabbit back, Georgina?
I’ve never understood coulrophobia, myself.

Me too, the creator is a master of the human face.
