What GreatWyrmGold said. My aunt used to say a well-trained clown will let kids come to them on their own terms. But there will always be someone who gets too close before a kid is ready, or a parent who doesn’t let their kid acclimatize to the clown because ‘I like clowns so of course my kid will too’.

People are afraid of clowns because the dichotomy of “Funny entertainer” and “scary monster” makes them an easy target for hack horror writers.

Clown makeup makes clowns look inhuman enough to tip them into the uncanny valley for some viewers. Also, many clowns are loud and many children react poorly to loud noises they didn’t make.
