If you’re not doing your job as a clown- your REAL job, which is to make a scared lonely little kid feel okay- then you gotta stop being a clown for a bit…. damn.
Especially lovely because this is actually the thinking behind the IRL shift in kid-facing clown makeup design. A lot less designs do full-white, and modify the features less (IE less Big Mouth Shape thats permanently smiling), because those things are what kids get scared by.
She doesn’t have a clown name, she doesn’t have a routine, she doesn’t even have make-up, she’s even leading a robbery against a place protected by the corps… So how come McBell’s the only one in this chapter who’s acting like a real clown!!
I felt the impulse to re-read the archive today, just because sometimes when you’re keeping up with something a page every few days like this for a few years it’s easy to forget exactly what’s going on. Anyway, I’m in awe of how expressive your characters are, how even background characters always have great, unique designs, and especially of your gift for showing complex action without the pages becoming confusing. Also the writing is great and hilarious. Good job!
McBell always gave shonen protag vibes—that panel just solidified it for me. Been a while since we seen her out of clown makeup. I swear she just looks cooler every time!
God, McBell. Even when it seems like you are staying from the path, you’re still showing everyone else what a real hero looks like. God fucking damn.
It’s been too long since we saw her out of make-up.
It’s been so long, I almost didn’t recognize her. Probably a sign of how much Joe’s art has improved since the beginning!

God this is so well written

The makeup matters less. Beautiful.

Sometimes you have to make the right decisions to make a kid feel better and safe regardless of what your profession is.

I did not see that coming

It took you 129 pages to realize this comic is My Hero Academia?
I don’t know what that is.
aw man
let’s hope there won’t be any unforeseen consequences coming from that genuine act of kindness
It’s not like she had a secret identity in the first place. Or did you mean something else?
She doesn’t have pie gloves anymore, how would she defend herself if a mime jumped out the bushes?
Well, probably with “All that kickboxing and stuff? And also fistboxing? What’s that called? Boxing.”
These two better have formed a lifelong bond or else!
