Nah, Bout’s a son with strong influence from his father. In that case “success” means:

1: Be awesome just like dad’s awesome. (In this case that means being an A+ grade clown.)
2: Have Binky be proud of him. (Or at least impressed at how good a clown he is.)

That’s what he really wants. Doing other things and impressing other people (like Anethesia, McBell, Ollie, the Dean, the Mayor, etc.) is nice, but not really satisfying.

According to my intuition, right now it seems like he’s got the first part, (or at least the look of it) and he thought he’d get the second part, (Dad’s approval) but dad just shut him down. And while sure, he fired back at Binky that he’s good enough on his own, he still places a lot of weight on Binky’s opinion. That’s what he really wants, and that’s what’s weighing him down now.
