Every update, for like the past month, has got me goin “oh god, this is heartbreaking, let’s hope it gets a little better for McBell next week” and then nope. We’re loading the bases for this one, folks. Making for a maximum sadness grand slam.
Me: man I don’t think we can get any more death flags planted on Mustard at this point
McBell: *visualizes Mustard on a white background looking over her shoulder at her and smiling *
Me: OH GOD DAMMIT
What I think is happening is that Mcbell is fighting Echo over the answering machine. Waylaying Echo’s metanarrative bullshit with sincere appreciation of Mustard.
Not only is Echo getting her big fight against McBell now, but it’s in the only arena where they and (as far as we know) only they can fight, and she doesn’t even realize it!
Man i ain’t too bright sometimes, i was struggling with deja-vu on this page for a solid 10 seconds till it dawned on me that i’ve already read this whole page from the author’s patreon 🤦🏻♂️
It could actually be true. She knows she’s the Protagonist, but a protagonist doesn’t necessarily get to be the hero.
She knows a fair number of heroes too, like Bout.
Though a common thing with heroes is that they don’t really think of themselves at heroes, so her not seeing herself as a hero is in character, and would be even if she actually isn’t the hero. How’s that for a mindscrew?
I’m wondering if the message is going to be even remotely coherent, like they’ll listen to it later and it’s just hysterical blubbering with a few identifiable words here and there, and so the death flags are negated by McBell having an emotional moment when she’s trying to have an emotional moment.
Does “another goddamn mouth to feed” imply that McBell had siblings? It feels like you wouldn’t say that about an only child. But I could be overthinking it.
She got dumped at the mall. Just when you think McBell’s backstory can’t get any sadder.
Don’t do this to me
McBell finally decided her future lies
Beyond the Mustard brick road

Aha, it’s ironic because Mustard uses an umbrella!
Joe if you kill off Mustard I’m covering your house in bread crumbs and unleashing as many seagulls as I can capture.
Alt text for future mobile readers-
McBell you are literally the hero of this comic book you little freak[.]
Thanks!
Too bad she’s clearly reading these pages on mobile!

I sure hope Maggie hears this answering machine message and feels super bad about everything
Okay, she has been dying for more than a month now, how.mich longer are we going to drag this out?

Ooh, I like this!

You want irony, you edgelord ex-mime? You got it!
Meta-Narrative warfare? I dig it.
I’ve been wondering something along those lines myself.
D’awwwwwwww…..

Wait, was McBell abandoned the same day Maggie got “killed”? It was raining both days and the timeline makes sense.
Ooo, I like that theory.
And as we all know, it rains no more than once a year in Pinfall. Usually less.
Plot twist: Mcbell is secretly Maggie’s illegitemate child.
Normally I’d say “she doesn’t know she’s the hero,” but that’s demonstrably untrue.

It figures that child services in Pinfall would suck.
