“Doctor, I’m all out of hope. I’m lost and alone in a cruel world where the future is vague and uncertain.”
“Treatment is simple. Go see the great clown Mustard, that should cheer you up.”
    “But doctor, I AM Mustard.”

this hits hard. But also, if Mustard dies (which honestly at this rate in the fight, she might), she could come back! Her sister did. Maybe she’ll become high-school bully-mega-jock again

By the way – where are their parents?

It definitely feels… odd, seeing this scene after all the way-too-cartoony toned stuff before it. Kind of sours the impact, at least for me. Everything felt like a joke up until this page, or at the very least hyper-exaggerated, only to have a realistic breakdown in the reaction.

I dunno, man, it at least feels like there needs to be more clarity on why everything was so *exaggerated* up til this point. It didn’t feel in line with the tone up to this point in the comic at all.

The dissonance is absolutely intentional. Everything is all cartoony cause… Regardless this is a comic based heavily on cartoon logic. But this? This is meant to be jarring and shellshocking. It’s meant to put you off and confuse/disturb you.

It doesn’t really confuse or disturb me, though; it leaves me feeling like the impact was lost, at least a little. Morgan, this entire section, was written like a cartoon supervillain, and Maggie the perfect kid of kindness save for bugging her older sister. That’s a thing we want to root for, since her sister is, well, a cartoon supervillain.

The tone shifting up to this point was not this extreme, by a long shot, and it left me feeling jarred and unable to fully buy into what should have been a *crushing* moment. Hell, the dissonance of the little Farting Butt into Morgan bursting into tears is a great example of it done right, because the line is established, it reminds her of how she treated her sister, and whatnot, but it’s still a juvenile little drawing. Up til this point, Morgan was Mayor levels of actively hateful and vicious within her circle, if the narrative is to be believed. I don’t buy that a character set up to behave that way gives a shit about her sister, simply because she doesn’t act in a way that shows ANY fondness, respect, or care about her sister.

I mean, to quote Morgan herself from a while ago, she WAS a teenager. She seemingly cared for her sister a lot more than she let on, and when her shitty attitude indirectly got her killed, it shocked her out of it. Makes sense to me.

Sure it is a shock and doubtlessly intended as one. But it is not totally out of the blue: The fight between Morgan and Maggie was a build-up to this and there were other incidents: The fight between Binki and Bout comes to mind and quite a few flashbacks were not very “jokular”. For me one of the many, many things I like in this comic is the author’s abilitiy to turn the mood on a dime.

From Maggie’s perspective, after this Morgan stole her entire life and all her goals and dreams. Meanwhile, Maggie is the undead living in a cult who sewed her mouth shut so she can’t even eat solid food. And this went on for years. She hasn’t gotten to properly live or grow outside of her hoghschool years. Some people have said it’s odd that Maggie is aware that McBell is the MC yet seemingly not aware that this means she’ll inevitably lose to McBell in their showdown. But I think she may actually want to be put to rest, finally. And she wants to bring the whole rotten world down with her.

Huh, I never considered the “stole my life” angle before. I can see how Ringmaster could have played on that.

I would love it (though it probably isn’t going to happen) if Binky came in now to set Echo straight.

“I don’t know what Mustard was like in high school. All I know is, she’s spent the past ten years trying to live up to her little sister’s example. And from what she’s told me, it was an example worth living up to. Even if you’ve forgotten it.”
